1 Michelin Star
Chiswick. Former riverside village, now home to yummy mummies, the finishing line of the boat race, London's oldest brewery, and one of the best tasting menu-only restaurants I've had the pleasure of eating at: Mikael Jonsson's Hedone.
We came to Michelin-starred Hedone at the start of August, on a Saturday night. We requested a counter seat and if you ask me this is the only way to really feel like you're a part of the experience. We had the pleasure of observing the pastry chef and the chef responsible for preparing appetisers that night, and it was such a joy to watch these total pro's work their magic, all under the watchful eye of Chef Mikael Jonsson, who stood in the corner of the kitchen for most of the service, checking each dish and surveying his kingdom.
A dinner at Hedone means relinquishing all control. You don't get given a menu and you have no knowledge of what comes next or how many meat or fish dishes you will get. So get seated and let the team behind the kitchen counter whisk you away.
Chef Mikael is obsessed with ingredients and seasonality and the creativity and quality of his dishes are a testament to his dedication to the culinary art. Hedone's delicious and incredibly creative food took us on a journey we are not about to forget. Our personal favourites (though it was hard to choose as there were only hits, not misses) were the Dorset Crab in crab consommé and the vegetables cooked in ham butter topped with the most gorgeous Périgord Truffles.
The service was flawless and just added to the experience. Our waiter was very knowledgable, had a brilliant sense of humour and embraced our excitement over every dish that was served. Aurelie Jean-Marie-Flore, Mikael's business partner and the manager of Hedone since the restaurant's opening, was also ever present, keen to share the restaurant's vision and ethic and handed us the most gorgeous loaf of sourdough bread to take home with us at the end of the night.
Fun fact about Hedone: It's crazy to think that Chef Mikael Jonsson had never worked in a professional kitchen before opening his understated but exquisitely designed and decorated spot off the beaten path in Chiswick. A solicitor in Sweden by trade, Food-blogger-turned-Chef, Jonsson earned his first star only a year after opening Hedone. More to come no doubt! Chef Mikael also follows a paleo diet.
A big thank you to Aiste Miseviciute (www.luxeat.com) who recommended this place and is always a source of inspiration to me on my voyage of culinary discovery.
